Why We Moved From WA to SC

Why did you move from WA to SC?

When I explain why we moved to other people I break it down to three main reasons.

1) Tired of long commutes with heavy traffic

My husband was commuting over 3 hrs per day for work and I was sitting over 2 hrs on my commute. If it was raining hard that day or if there was an accident on the freeway then you can forget about being home before bedtime. In the morning we would drive to work when it was still dark and then in the evening come home to the dark again. It felt like alot of wasted of time sitting in that car. *In SC my husband now commutes 20 min to work.

2) Negative spiritual environment and the head-scratching laws

If you’ve lived on the West Coast you know what I’m talking about. What is good is considered bad, and what is bad is considered good.

I understand that no state is immune to the influence of the ‘new agenda’ but we thought why live in a state that is set on spearheading an anti Christian movement.

3) Looking for an affordable home

In WA a low inventory, a booming economy, and foreign Chinese cash bidders all worked together to inflate the housing market. The affordable homes were a very far drive away.

So because of this, and some other micro reasons, we decided to move out of Washington state. This blog is journaling our journey from Washington State to South Carolina. From living on the west coast to the east coast. And all the 2,733 miles in between!

Other Questions

Why did you choose South Carolina?

We need to find the first Slavic national who moved to SC and ask them😂 . We considered the great state of Texas but decided SC was the way to go. NC is a nice state, they definitely have more technology jobs but home prices are just as high as in WA. SC is more rural, undeveloped, and homes are cheaper. That may appeal to some, to others its actually a repellant. So often I hear visiting people say ‘this place is like a village.’ SC is definitely not city living, if you are looking for that fast paced metropolis try Atlanta, GA or Charlotte, NC.

Why did you move to Upstate SC?

Its good to be close to Greenville!

A friend agreed to show us around SC so we flew in and visited the Greenville SC area. It was winter and love at first sight. Beautiful December weather, dry air, blue skies, friendly people even in the city (stark contrast to Seattle).

If you ever visit Greenville SC yourself you know what I’m talking about. Its a great wonderful city to visit and walk around in, and there are so many fun events like music festivals, farmers markets, and we even stumbled upon a pole vaulting competition on main street! So fun.

An article online even says “There’s a very European feel to Greenville which makes so many people that come here feel instantly comfortable.” I definitly agree with that.

Was it hard to move to SC?

Yes and no 😁 I could write a book about this.. but to keep it short here.. my husband and I don’t get crazy attached to things and places. We love traveling and taking road trips.

Do you miss family?

More than anything yes. Missing family is still the hardest and most painful part of moving away.

Will I like it in SC?

It depends on your attitude and financial situation. If you move with a negative attitude then you will gravitate to the negative things. If you can’t make money in SC and have high expenses thats a problem too.

Also do your research. I’ve seen posts on facebook where people write ‘Hi just moved to ‘middle-of-nowhere-town’ SC, where are the big communities and can anyone recommend a good coffee shop?” and I look at that city on the map and I see the square footage of that city is smaller than my cousins bathroom (I might be a little exaggerating).

Its seems like these people just threw a dart on the map. Sometimes you get lucky.. and other times you regret the choice.

Before you move, before you BUY A HOUES REMOTELY, please visit the local area first. If you can’t visit for the weekend, google the city and look on the map. Is costco more than a 1 hour drive away? Does it take more than 30min to reach the freeway? Is the volume of mobile homes greater than the volume of normal homes?!! Alot to consider when thinking about location.
